1 Twelfth Sunday after Pentecost (B) or 12PentecostB 2 Samuel 18:5-9, 15, Psalm 130 // 1 Kings 19:4-8 Psalm 34:1-8 Ephesians 4:25-5:2 John 6:35, Samuel 18:5 The king gave orders to Joab, Abishai, and Ittai: "For my sake, protect my boy Absalom." All the troops heard what the king ordered regarding Absalom to all the commanders. 6 So the troops marched into the field to meet the Israelites. The battle was fought in the Ephraim forest. 7 The army of Israel was defeated there by David's soldiers. A great slaughter of twenty thousand men took place that day. 8 The battle spread out over the entire countryside, and the forest devoured more soldiers than the sword that day. 9 Absalom came upon some of David's men. Absalom was riding on a mule, and the mule went under the tangled branches of a large oak tree. Absalom's head got caught in the tree. He was left hanging in midair while the mule under him kept on going. 2 Samuel 18:5 And the king ordered Joab and Abishai and Ittai, "Deal gently for my sake with the young man Absalom." 4 מ Psalm 130:1 A pilgrimage song. I cry out to you from the depths, LORD-- 2 my Lord, listen to my voice! Let your ears pay close attention to my request for mercy! 3 If you kept track of sins,lord-- my Lord, who would stand a chance? 4 But forgiveness is with you-- that's why you are honored. 5 I hope, LORD. My whole being hopes, and I wait for God's promise. 6 My whole being waits for my Lord-- more than the night watch waits for morning; yes, more than the night watch waits for morning! 7 Israel, wait for the LORD! 5 א 1 Kings 19:4 He himself went farther on into the desert a day's journey. He finally sat down under a solitary broom bush. He longed for his own death: "It's more than enough, LORD! Take my life because I'm no better than my ancestors." 5 He lay down and slept under the solitary broom bush. Then suddenly a messenger tapped him and said to him, "Get up! Eat something!" 6 Elijah opened his eyes and saw flatbread baked on glowing coals and a jar of water right by his head. He ate and drank, and then went back to sleep. 7 The LORD's messenger returned a second time and tapped him. "Get up!" the messenger said. "Eat something because you have a difficult road ahead of you." 8 Elijah got up, ate and drank, and went refreshed by that food for forty days and nights until he arrived at Horeb, God's mountain. 1 Kings 19:4 But he himself went a day's journey into the wilderness and came and sat down under a broom tree. And he asked that he might die, saying, "It is enough; now, O LORD, take away my life, for I am no better than my fathers." 5 And he lay down and slept under a broom tree. And behold, an angel touched him and said to him, "Arise and eat." 6 And he looked, and behold, there was at his head a cake baked on hot stones and a jar of water. 6 מ תּ ת Psalm 34:1 Of David, when he pretended to be crazy before Abimelech, who banished him so that he left. I will bless the LORD at all times; his praise will always be in my mouth. 2 I praise the LORD-- let the suffering listen and rejoice. 3 Magnify the LORD with me! Together let us lift his name up high! 4 I sought the LORD and he answered me. He delivered me from all my fears. 5 Those who look to God will shine; their faces are never ashamed. 6 This suffering person cried out: the LORD listened and saved him from every trouble. 7 On every side, the LORD's messenger protects those who honor God; and he delivers them. 8 Taste and see how good the LORD is! The one who takes refuge in him is truly happy! Psalm 34:1 Of David, when he changed his behavior before Abimelech, so that he drove him out, and he went away. I will bless the LORD at all times; his praise shall continually be in my mouth. 2 My soul makes its boast in the LORD; let the humble hear and be glad. 3 Oh, magnify the LORD with me, and let us exalt his name together! 4 I sought the LORD, and he answered me and delivered me from all my fears. 5 Those who look to him are radiant, and their faces shall never be ashamed. 6 This poor man cried, and the LORD heard him and saved him out of all his troubles. 7 The angel of the LORD encamps around those who fear him, and delivers them. 8 Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him! 7 Ephesians 4:25 Therefore, after you have gotten rid of lying, Each of you must tell the truth to your neighbor because we are parts of each other in the same body. 26 Be angry without sinning. Don't let the sun set on your anger. 27 Don't provide an opportunity for the devil. 28 Thieves should no longer steal. Instead they should go to work, using their hands to do good so that they will have something to share with whoever is in need. 29 Don't let any foul words come out of your mouth. Only say what is helpful when it is needed for building up the community so that it benefits those who hear what you say. 30 Don't make the Holy Spirit of God unhappy--you were sealed by him for the day of redemption. 31 Put aside all bitterness, losing your temper, anger, shouting, and slander, along with every other evil. 32 Be kind, compassionate, and forgiving to each other, in the same way God forgave you in Christ. 5:1 Therefore, imitate God like dearly loved children. 2 Live your life with love, following the example of Christ, who loved us and gave himself for us. He was a sacrificial offering that smelled sweet to God. Ephesians 4:25 Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of another. 26 Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, 27 and give no opportunity to the devil. 28 Let the thief no longer steal, but rather let him labor, doing honest work with his own hands, so that he may have something to share with anyone in need. 29 Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear. 30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31 Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. 32 Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you. 5:1 Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children. 2 And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. Ephesians 4:25 ιὸ ἀποθέµενοι τὸ ψεῦδος λαλεῖτε ἀλήθειαν ἕκαστος µετὰ τοῦ πλησίον αὐτοῦ, ὅτι ἐσµὲν ἀλλήλων µέλη. 26 ὀργίζεσθε καὶ µὴ ἁµαρτάνετε ὁ ἥλιος µὴ ἐπιδυέτω ἐπὶ [τῷ] παροργισµῷ ὑµῶν, 27 µηδὲ δίδοτε τόπον τῷ διαβόλῳ. 28 ὁ κλέπτων µηκέτι κλεπτέτω, µᾶλλον δὲ κοπιάτω ἐργαζόµενος ταῖς [ἰδίαις] χερσὶν τὸ ἀγαθόν, ἵνα ἔχῃ µεταδιδόναι τῷ χρείαν ἔχοντι. 29 πᾶς λόγος σαπρὸς ἐκ τοῦ στόµατος ὑµῶν µὴ ἐκπορευέσθω, ἀλλὰ εἴ τις ἀγαθὸς πρὸς οἰκοδοµὴν τῆς χρείας, ἵνα δῷ χάριν τοῖς ἀκούουσιν. 30 καὶ µὴ λυπεῖτε τὸ πνεῦµα τὸ ἅγιον τοῦ θεοῦ, ἐν ᾧ ἐσφραγίσθητε εἰς ἡµέραν ἀπολυτρώσεως. 31 πᾶσα πικρία καὶ θυµὸς καὶ ὀργὴ καὶ κραυγὴ καὶ βλασφηµία ἀρθήτω ἀφ ὑµῶν σὺν πάσῃ κακίᾳ. 32 γίνεσθε [δὲ] εἰς ἀλλήλους χρηστοί, εὔσπλαγχνοι, χαριζόµενοι ἑαυτοῖς, καθὼς καὶ ὁ θεὸς ἐν Χριστῷ ἐχαρίσατο ὑµῖν. 5:1 Γίνεσθε οὖν µιµηταὶ τοῦ θεοῦ ὡς τέκνα ἀγαπητὰ 2 καὶ περιπατεῖτε ἐν ἀγάπῃ, καθὼς καὶ ὁ Χριστὸς ἠγάπησεν ἡµᾶς καὶ παρέδωκεν ἑαυτὸν ὑπὲρ ἡµῶν προσφορὰν καὶ θυσίαν τῷ θεῷ εἰς ὀσµὴν εὐωδίας.

8 John 6:35 Jesus replied, "I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. 36 But I told you that you have seen me and still don't believe. 37 Everyone whom the Father gives to me will come to me, and I won't send away anyone who comes to me. 38 I have come down from heaven not to do my will, but the will of him who sent me. 39 This is the will of the one who sent me, that I won't lose anything he has given me, but I will raise it up at the last day. 40 This is my Father's will: that all who see the Son and believe in him will have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day." 41 The Jewish opposition grumbled about him because he said, "I am the bread that came down from heaven." 42 They asked, "Isn't this Jesus, Joseph's son, whose mother and father we know? How can he now say, 'I have come down from heaven'?" 43 Jesus responded, "Don't grumble among yourselves. 44 No one can come to me unless they are drawn to me by the Father who sent me, and I will raise them up at the last day. 45 It is written in the Prophets, And they will all be taught by God. Everyone who has listened to the Father and learned from him comes to me. 46 No one has seen the Father except the one who is from God. He has seen the Father. 47 I assure you, whoever believes has eternal life. 48 I am the bread of life. 49 Your ancestors ate manna in the wilderness and they died. 50 This is the bread that comes down from heaven so that whoever eats from it will never die. 51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever, and the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh." 9 John 6:35 εἶπεν αὐτοῖς ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἐγώ εἰµι ὁ ἄρτος τῆς ζωῆς ὁ ἐρχόµενος πρὸς ἐµὲ οὐ µὴ πεινάσῃ, καὶ ὁ πιστεύων εἰς ἐµὲ οὐ µὴ διψήσει πώποτε. 36 Ἀλλ εἶπον ὑµῖν ὅτι καὶ ἑωράκατέ [µε] καὶ οὐ πιστεύετε. 37 πᾶν ὃ δίδωσίν µοι ὁ πατὴρ πρὸς ἐµὲ ἥξει, καὶ τὸν ἐρχόµενον πρὸς ἐµὲ οὐ µὴ ἐκβάλω ἔξω, 38 ὅτι καταβέβηκα ἀπὸ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ οὐχ ἵνα ποιῶ τὸ θέληµα τὸ ἐµὸν ἀλλὰ τὸ θέληµα τοῦ πέµψαντός µε. 39 τοῦτο δέ ἐστιν τὸ θέληµα τοῦ πέµψαντός µε, ἵνα πᾶν ὃ δέδωκέν µοι µὴ ἀπολέσω ἐξ αὐτοῦ, ἀλλὰ ἀναστήσω αὐτὸ [ἐν] τῇ ἐσχάτῃ ἡµέρᾳ. 40 τοῦτο γάρ ἐστιν τὸ θέληµα τοῦ πατρός µου, ἵνα πᾶς ὁ θεωρῶν τὸν υἱὸν καὶ πιστεύων εἰς αὐτὸν ἔχῃ ζωὴν αἰώνιον, καὶ ἀναστήσω αὐτὸν ἐγὼ [ἐν] τῇ ἐσχάτῃ ἡµέρᾳ. 41 Ἐγόγγυζον οὖν οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι περὶ αὐτοῦ ὅτι εἶπεν ἐγώ εἰµι ὁ ἄρτος ὁ καταβὰς ἐκ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ, 42 καὶ ἔλεγον οὐχ οὗτός ἐστιν Ἰησοῦς ὁ υἱὸς Ἰωσήφ, οὗ ἡµεῖς οἴδαµεν τὸν πατέρα καὶ τὴν µητέρα; πῶς νῦν λέγει ὅτι ἐκ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ καταβέβηκα; 43 ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς µὴ γογγύζετε µετ ἀλλήλων. 44 οὐδεὶς δύναται ἐλθεῖν πρός µε ἐὰν µὴ ὁ πατὴρ ὁ πέµψας µε ἑλκύσῃ αὐτόν, κἀγὼ ἀναστήσω αὐτὸν ἐν τῇ ἐσχάτῃ ἡµέρᾳ. 45 ἔστιν γεγραµµένον ἐν τοῖς προφήταις καὶ ἔσονται πάντες διδακτοὶ θεοῦ πᾶς ὁ ἀκούσας παρὰ τοῦ πατρὸς καὶ µαθὼν ἔρχεται πρὸς ἐµέ. 46 οὐχ ὅτι τὸν πατέρα ἑώρακέν τις εἰ µὴ ὁ ὢν παρὰ τοῦ θεοῦ, οὗτος ἑώρακεν τὸν πατέρα. 47 ἀµὴν ἀµὴν λέγω ὑµῖν, ὁ πιστεύων ἔχει ζωὴν αἰώνιον. 48 Ἐγώ εἰµι ὁ ἄρτος τῆς ζωῆς. 49 οἱ πατέρες ὑµῶν ἔφαγον ἐν τῇ ἐρήµῳ τὸ µάννα καὶ ἀπέθανον 50 οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ ἄρτος ὁ ἐκ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ καταβαίνων, ἵνα τις ἐξ αὐτοῦ φάγῃ καὶ µὴ ἀποθάνῃ. 51 ἐγώ εἰµι ὁ ἄρτος ὁ ζῶν ὁ ἐκ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ καταβάς ἐάν τις φάγῃ ἐκ τούτου τοῦ ἄρτου ζήσει εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα, καὶ ὁ ἄρτος δὲ ὃν ἐγὼ δώσω ἡ σάρξ µού ἐστιν ὑπὲρ τῆς τοῦ κόσµου ζωῆς.
